Sexual orientation is a relatively recent notion in human rights law and practice and one of the controversial ones in politics prejudices negative stereotypes and discrimination are deeply imbedded in our value system and patterns of behaviour. The un human rights office has documented a wide range of human rights violations committed against individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity. The ontario human rights code the code is a law that provides for equal rights and opportunities and recognizes the dignity and worth of every person in ontario the code makes it against the law to discriminate against someone or to harass them because of their sexual orientation or their marital status. The right to sexuality and freedom from discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation is based on the universality of human rights and the inalienable nature of rights belonging to every person by virtue of being human. Lesbian and gay rights are human rights is this just a political slogan to be chanted outside legislatures or are there legal arguments to support the claim that the right to be free from sexual orientation discrimination is a human right
